“Sustainability is a fad. Sustainability is dead.” I hear these comments over and over.
I do not believe either of these two statements.

The reason is I see the change in our industry, our customers, and our society as it pertains to the environment. This is why, when I heard that the AICC wanted to have a workshop about the benefits of Sustainability Plant Audits, I eagerly volunteered to serve as moderator.
The purpose of the Sustainability Audit Workshop (9/30/14 in Long Beach, CA) was to explain how a plant could save money implementing various sustainable business practices. Each of the three panelists (Mark Mathes, CEO Vanguard Packaging, Brett Kirkpatrick, COO Bay City Containers, and Marco Ferrara, Director Cajas de Carton Sultana) used specific examples from their own plants. For example, Sultana developed an internal Scorecard, established measurable goals, then monitored progress monthly. The goals dealt with gas/electricity/water consumption along with transportation.

Sales Opportunities Come in Big and Small Stores
“Brand Packaging” in their October publication stated “The Club Store category is growing 6% annually”. The magazine also mentioned that some smaller store concepts are reporting better same store sales than big box retailers resulting in more small box stores planned by Walmart and Target. i.e. Neighborhood Market by Walmart and Target Express. This growth will require different package designs such as color blocking, multi–sided graphics, retail ready, etc.
