BCM Inks’ New Aqueous Primer Improves Digital Print

According to Smithers Pira, a marketing research firm, digital printing is the fastest-growing segment in packaging. The projected compound annual growth rate of the digital print market is 13 percent.  The digital printing market is expected to grow to $22.4 billion by 2022.

BCM Inks has been involved with digital printing for over 15 years. BCM’s latest development is a press ready aqueous primer for the digital print corrugated market that provides excellent adhesion while enhancing the gloss and density of the print.  The inks print cleaner and crisper on our primer.  One of the main advantages of BCM’s primer is that it is press ready.  This allows the operators to focus on printing rather than press side chemistry.

Digital printing is growing because consumer product companies want increased personalization and speed to market. The personalization leads to one off print runs of smaller quantities which is ideal to print digitally.  Digital printing allows print suppliers to improve the levels of service they offer to customers, as well as open new opportunities.

Historically, one of the biggest complaints about digital printing has been slow press speeds. To combat the speed complaint, the digital print market moved from multi pass machines to single pass machines to greatly increase press speeds.  Today, press speeds for single pass machines can reach 250 linear ft/min.  A primer is needed to achieve these speeds with optimal appearance.  Most single pass digital machines, like the Barberan Jetmaster, require an aqueous primer.  The aqueous primer is applied in-line prior to printing.

BCM Inks has always had an active R&D department. Our emphasis on the direct print graphics corrugated box and display market led us to develop a superior aqueous primer for the digital corrugated market.
